Healing Body and Soul After Loss: Healing techniques and tools to help you release feelings of grief

Grief and loss can have an impact on the health of your body, mind and feelings. Heartbreak over the loss of a family member or friend, or a major change in the circumstances of your life – even a positive one – can trigger mournful feelings that can be hard to shake. Any emotions you feel are “alive” in your chakras and the aura of energy around your body. Feelings that are held over a long period of time, or that are suppressed in an attempt to “move on” faster than you’re really able, are internalized in the energy field and can affect your body and your physical health (especially the heart and lungs, as discussed here). The more we are able to process and release feelings of grief, sorrow, hurt, loss or regret, the healthier and happier we will be.

To that end, here are some natural suggestions to help to process and heal from grief.

Dealing With Grief and Mourning in Healthy Ways

  1. Be patient with yourself. Give your mind and body the time you need to heal.

Accept what you’re feeling and recognize that you may need to feel it before you can move through it and get beyond it. This amount of time this can take is different for everyone.

  1. Consider seeing a therapist who practices emotional clearing or energy psychology.

  1. Get up and move.

It’s usually recommended that people who are depressed or who are suffering a loss engage in some physical activity. Exercise helps your body to release stuck emotions and secretes endorphins which help pick up your mood. Listening to upbeat music can have the same effect!

  1. Find a creative outlet.

Doing something creative – even if it’s as simple as finger-painting, making a collage, or building a mashed-potato volcano – can help you channel some of the big emotions you’re feeling into something outside of you. Artwork, creative writing or journaling can help you understand new aspects of what you’re feeling - which often helps the painful feelings to lessen and be released.

  1. Keep yourself productive – but not busy.

“Keep busy” is common advice when you’re hurting. I suggest keeping busy – in moderation. If you’re doing too much, the feelings you’re running so fast to avoid will still be there when you slow down. In the meantime, they can make you sick. It is, however, very important to keep motivated and on track with the things that you enjoy that were meaningful before your loss. Spend time outdoors; go out for dinner with friends; sing, write, or do whatever makes you feel successful and happy. Likewise, make sure you’re getting enough (but not too much) sleep.

  1. Do everything you can to support your immune system and your physical health.

You will not be grateful after your grieving period is over if you’ve let your health decline, nor would your lost loved ones appreciate you doing yourself harm in their absence. Feeling bad is not an excuse to let your health slide, especially since doing so will only leave you feeling worse.

  1. Use of some of the herbal and therapeutic ways to soothe your spirit.

Whether this means taking the time to listen to music, indulging in a spa day, or getting a massage, it’s important that you nourish yourself emotionally and spiritually. Herbal aids like the Bach homeopathic ‘Rescue Remedy,’ St. John’s Wort, or the powerful essential oil blends like "Joy" and "White Angelica" are a helpful way to support your emotional healing during this time.

  1. Do what you can to feel good every day, if only for a few moments.

Growing Herbs

Herbs are a great addition to any home. Many are compact and can even be planted on the windowsill.

Herbs can be a lot of fun to grow. Many are aromatic and most don’t need tons of space. In fact, many can be planted in containers.

What Kinds of Herbs?

Deciding what kinds of herbs to grow should be based on individual preference. Different herbs pair well with different types of food. For those individuals with limited space, choosing herbs that will be used most often is the best way to decide. Some enjoy strong flavors, and others prefer a subtler taste. These are all things to consider.

Where to Grow

Herbs are relatively low maintenance when compared to other plants. They don’t need too much to keep them happy. Sun is important, as it is for all plants. Some herbs prefer ground that is moist, and others prefer drier conditions, so it is important to check the requirements of each variety. Examples of this include rosemary and thyme, which prefer drier ground, and basil and chives, which like the wet a little more.

Herbs can be used to supplement rock gardens. The rocks provide a surface over which they can climb, and the herbs add a nice visual (and aromatic) touch.

Many herbs can also be planted inside, on a windowsill or other area that has access to sunlight. This is a great way to grow smaller quantities of herbs, and to have them conveniently on hand. Examples of these include chives, basil, parsley, cilantro and rosemary.


Most herbs have leaves of some kind. One of the exceptions to this is chives, which look somewhat like blades of grass. To use chives, simply take a bunch and cut the length needed with a pair of scissors. Chives are perennial and will flower beginning in their second year. The flowers are also edible.

Other herbs, such as oregano, rosemary and basil, have leaves that are easily accessible, and it is these leaves that impart the most flavor. Simply cut the herbs at the stem. The leaves can then be picked off if desired.

Some herbs are best utilized whole – stem and leaf. These include parsley and cilantro. Parsley is often used as a garnish for the sides of dishes and the tops of soups.

Dill is a unique herb. When using the stem and leaves, it is called ‘dill weed.’ But the seeds of dill are also very flavorful, and are easily cultivated.


Most herbs can be used fresh, dried, or frozen. Some, such as chives, are best used fresh as they tend to lose much of their flavor otherwise.

Fresh, frozen or dried, herbs make a great contribution to almost any dish.

Fresh culinary herbs are ideal for organic container gardening. Like every plant, culinary herbs require sun, water and nutrient-rich soil for vigorous health and flavor -- and with organic container gardening, no harmful pesticides or chemical fertilizers are used, adding to the naturally healthy benefits of fresh herbs. Culinary herbs are easy to grow outdoors in small places, making them the perfect crop for organic container gardening. Fast-growing and productive, crisp herbs season soups, salads, sauces and condiments; dress meat and vegetarian main courses, and bestow vividness to every sort of dish. Gardeners can set up a basic organic container garden with culinary herbs in any bright area and see their plants thrive.


Culinary herbs will grow in almost any type of container. From old plastic storage bins filled with soil to windowboxes to plain terra cotta pots, herbs require minimal room for their roots to expand. Choose containers that will accommodate the number of herbs to be planted, and make sure the vessel provides plenty of drainage for excess water. Light is the most significant component in organic container gardening. Basil, chives, dill, oregano, parsley, cilantro, marjoram and sage prize broad sun. Rosemary, mint and thyme can endure partial shade with intervals of sun. Nearly all culinary herbs will demand watering every day if planted on a bright, hot patio or in permeable terra cotta containers, which lose water through evaporation.
